20021201 (Sunday) Abandoned Stroller, Los Angeles

20021202 (Monday) I Call It "Broken Dreams", Santa Monica
Pages from a screenplay laying in the gutter.
The script was apparently a Jackie Gleason biopic.

20021203 (Tuesday) Not For Sale, Santa Monica
No actual For Sale signs ever went up in these frames, which were soon taken down.
As if the buildings were playing dress up, fantasizing about being sold to rich new owners who would gussey them up and make them feel all fancy.

20021204 (Wednesday) Tiles, Santa Monica
I have taken to walking through the alleys of Santa Monica in the afternoons. That's where all the interesting stuff is.

20021205 (Thursday) Surveyor's Tripod, Santa Monica
I could have taken it if I wanted.
There was no one looking.

20021206 (Friday) Balloons, Santa Monica
There was no indication as to what these balloons were for.

20021207 (Saturday) Cone And Stump, Santa Monica
These cones appeared all over the place very suddenly.
I think they are to mark trees recently cut down, perhaps for stump removal.
But several weeks later, the stumps and cones are still there.

20021208 (Sunday) L.A. County Arboretum, Arcadia
I stumbled across this place by accident.
But it is quite fascinating, and apparently well-known.
In fact you've likely seen it on television or in the movies.
It has been used as a backdrop by Hollywood for decades, for movies (such as Tarzan) and television (the Queen Anne Cottage appears in the opening credits for Fantasy Island).

20021209 (Monday) Car Hood, Santa Monica
Please make up your own story for how this came to be in this alley.

20021210 (Tuesday) HOT, Santa Monica
I believe this is a vent cover for a clothes drier.

20021211 (Wednesday) Pitchforks, Santa Monica
It's not like there is a lot of hay in Santa Monica.
So I do not understand why these pitchforks were hanging out looking for work.

20021212 (Thursday) Building, Century city
They get upset when you try to take pictures of things on the 20th Century Fox Lot.
Don't ask me why - it's a nice looking patch of land. They have nothing to be embarassed about.
But one takes it as a challenge. Would they mind me taking a picture from the lot of something not on the lot?
No one seemed to mind this photo. No one complained. But then, I do not think anyone saw me take it, either.

20021213 (Friday) Fan, Santa Monica
When I started this, I knew that this would serve as a bit of a journal of my photographic preferences at the time that I took each photo.
Anyone who has looked at more than a couple of these photos has no doubt noticed that there are a number of things I enjoy photographing. It's not really conscious, really - I just shoot what catches my eye - but that changes on a daily basis.
Sometimes I'm attracted to something because of its shape or colors or textures. Sometimes I like photographing signs that I find amusing. And there is, of course, trash. I like photographing trash.
I did not consider that my photographic mood at the time of choosing which photo to use for a given day might also be important.
On this day, for instance, I took three nice pictures. I had a difficult time deciding between two of them, and it came down to this: today I like texture. And that is what this photograph is all about for me.
Oh, and it doesn't hurt that it is essentially trash, too.

20021214 (Saturday) Goodyear Blimp, Carson
This is probably the Spirit Of America, the newest Goodyear blimp.
Spotted while launching on the drive back from Orange County.

20021215 (Sunday) Fruit Cake Follies, West Hollywood
Yes, the marquee does say "The Fruit Cake Follies".

20021216 (Monday) No Ped Allowed On The Median, Beverly Hills
It was a dark and stormy afternoon...
I hate days like this anyway, but it makes getting a picture all the more difficult.
So this was taken from the comfort of my car.
How wussy of me.

20021217 (Tuesday) To The Person Who Steals The Carts, Santa Monica
Do not leave them here. That's all they ask.

20021218 (Wednesday) The Time When Dinosaurs Had Christmas Trees... Made Of Ice!... Part 2!, Santa Monica
They should have modified it so the topiary brontos had their tongues stuck to the ice Christmas tree.

20021219 (Thursday) Building, Westwood
This is why I love medium format film and this camera.
The seemingly impossible juxtaposition of sharpness of detail and blurry quality of image make this one of my favorite photos ever.
This building was recently remodeled. It was a severe change from a frumpy old 1970's looking high rise (well, medium rise, I guess) to this modern glass monster.
I don't think it's an especially good looking building now, but it does have some interesting lines.
And the sky behind it in this photo is quite nice.

20021220 (Friday) Free Asembly 2.0, Santa Monica
I love the double meaning that this construction of stuff gives the phrase "Free Assembly".

20021221 (Saturday) Rocks, West Hollywood
Another texture-based picture.

20021222 (Sunday) Propane, Atascadero
Driving up to the Bay Area for Christmas vacation.
In farming country, you see things that you don't generally find in Los Angeles.

20021223 (Monday) Auto Spkr, Foster City
Intended as a companion picture to Model 4400 (I found this same type of box, though it is a different model number).
However, I think I like the sprinkler part of this picture better now that I look at it.

20021224 (Tuesday) Pipe, Belmont
Since I began taking these pictures, I've been noticing little things more than before.
Like this pipe - it has probably been here for years.
I probably saw it every day on my paper route as a kid.
But I never really noticed it before this day.
Not that it's all that interesting. Just an example.

20021225 (Wednesday) Box, Belmont
It only now strikes me as funny that this is the least Christmasy Christmas photo ever.
But someone had this in their driveway, and I thought it looked interesting.

20021226 (Thursday) Ostrich, Solvang
Why is it that the one creature that should taste like chicken tastes like beef?

20021227 (Friday) Three Birds, Santa Monica
I love this photo, but I can't even explain why.
I think I was trying to capture the airplane flying, apparently underneath the seagulls.
But the sharpness and detail in the picture are quite wonderful.

20021228 (Saturday) Here, Fishy, Fishy, Fishy!, Huntington Gardens, San Marino
The Huntington Library, Art Collections, And Botanical Gardens are a great place to spend an afternoon.
There are many garden areas, including this Japanese area.
The koi (Japanese goldfish) are huge and do tricks for visitors.

20021229 (Sunday) Exercise Equipment, West Hollywood
I like the size contrast here.
The suggestion that any one person could use both is funny to me.

20021230 (Monday) Abandoned, Los Angeles
It did not strike me at the time I took this picture just how disturbing an image it is.
In more than one way.

20021231 (Tuesday) PT Cruiser, Santa Monica
I did not put this scale model on this wall, I swear!
And I did not time the photo to get the lens flare.
But I like both of these things anyway.
